Indian Horse is not only a significant title because of the main character Saul having his last name Indian Horse, but also because horses were a very sacred animal to First Nations people. The horse represents living in both worlds. While horses weren't a native species to Canada, they were brought over seas by Europeans, they were praised for their strength and nobility. First Nations referred to them as a grandfather, meaning is was of high esteem. So while First Nations were discovering what an amazing animal horses were, what they didn't know was that they were stealing from Europeans. First Nations didn't realize that these animals belonged to people, but the Europeans just saw it as being theft. It symbolizes that oblivion can sometimes be your worst enemy, and that when lifestyles collide together it is perceived differently on either end.
