Saul Indian Horse
Saul was a strong, resilient Ojibway boy. He is the main character in Indian Horse. The novel follows Saul throughout his struggles and prosperities in life. Saul is very smart, when he was at residential school he always did his best to go unnoticed to relieve himself from harsh punishments. His determination was immense, he had incredible drive and stamina to strive to be the best hockey player he could. He is a very successful man, and a phenomenal hockey player, even though he had a few slip ups he was fearless, he always just grabs the bull by the horns and pushes through. He has a realistic outlook on life and believes that even if you are being treated terribly not to stoop to that level, because no one deserves to feel like that.
Father Leboutilier
Father Leboutilier was a positive role model for Saul, he was meant to portray safety and virtue in the forms of an angel and priest, yet he was the antagonist. He introduced Saul to the great sport of hockey, which provided Saul an escape from residential school. He helps Saul to improve his skills in hockey and even gets him out of residential school. Towards the end of the book we find out that Father Leboutilier was not as innocent as we believe. He had a tainted view on Saul and he loved him, just in the wrong way. This made it hard for Saul because the Father was giving him everything he wanted but also taking away every last bit of sanity he needed.
