Indian Horse was a very graphic and well written novel by Richard Wagamese. I really enjoyed how much detail there was about hockey and it mostly focused on the good in Saul's life, even though it was constantly tainted with negative things like abuse and racism. Indian Horse is a biography of Saul’s life and it shows how he perceives life and his attitude toward life is very positive. I think that it could have been more interesting if the beginning of the novel was cut a little shorter, because when I started the intro of the book it was so dry that I thought the whole book was going to be awful. I now have to say that it's a must read, it's a real eye opener to things that don’t get a lot of attention or talked about much. It was a huge learning step for me personally because I had no knowledge that there were even such things as residential school or why the stereotype of the “drunk Indian” existed or where it came from or what it even really meant. I learnt how far in our roots as Canadians that our racism and judgement towards people go. This book gave me a greater understand of what First Nations people went through, they didn't just lose their land, they were stripped of their culture, innocence, and way of life. They were told that they were insignificant and of lesser value, no human should ever be treated the way that they were. I would highly recommend that you read this book because it is really relatable on a higher level. My only suggestion to you is that you start reading this novel on a day off, because once you get into it, it's hard to put down.
